New sales jobs staff 'more likely to take up benefits'

Younger employees taking up new sales jobs are more likely to take part in flexible benefit schemes, it has been claimed.

According to the Institute For Employment Studies (IES), the benefits are designed to appeal to a younger workforce and are proving effective.

The comments contradict findings from Mercer which suggested that younger employees in their 20s were less likely to participate in such schemes compared to older colleagues, with only 47 per cent taking part compared to figures of up to 70 per cent for those aged in their 30s to 50s.

Duncan Brown, director of reward services at the IES, stated: "These findings are unusual and it is not a huge sample. Most research suggests that younger employees are more, rather than less likely, to take part in flexible benefit schemes."

He went on to say that if younger employees choose not to take part, it is generally because they do not understand the scheme properly.
