IT sector 'on the road to recovery'

The IT industry is beginning to boost employment levels as confidence returns to the sector, it has been claimed.

Global IT industry analyst Gartner polled 358 organisations in the sector and found that the median rate of increase in IT headcounts was 6.3 per cent across all respondents in the last 12 months.

Diane Berry, managing vice president at Gartner, said that as more companies resume hiring, employees will re-evaluate their current job situation and "contemplate and entertain" external opportunities.

She added: "Retention efforts at this time should be focused on identifying the profile of workforce you can't afford to lose, understanding what will keep them engaged and motivated, and addressing any potential issues."

Last month, Steve Huxham, chairman of the Recruitment Society, said that many staff are considering switching careers at the moment in order to take advantage of more buoyant jobs markets in other sectors.
